In our shIn our sheltered everyday lives, we are often held captive by problems whose (supposed) significance looms before us like an emotional wall. Under these circumstances, we struggle to make decisions, even with the awareness that the vast majority of cases are not actually a matter of life and death.
We often ask ourselves – particularly in hindsight – why we actually perceive things as so important that they could impede our actions.

The oft-cited idea of “thinking outside the box” may bring us closer to the answer to this question. We venture to shift our perspective with Theresa Breuer, who has accompanied people through life-changing steps that also had to be taken under intense time pressure and in the face of objectively existential dangers.

How can we block out the many uncertainties and risks and decide for or against a course of action?

The German journalist, filmmaker, photographer, war correspondent, and activist has lived and worked for extended periods in the Middle East, including Israel, Beirut, and Kabul. She made her first documentary in 2018 about female Afghan mountaineers. In the summer of 2021, through the organization Kabul Luftbrücke (Kabul airlift), founded specifically for this purpose, she was able to evacuate well over 4,000 Afghans from their home country. The documentary series in which she filmed this rescue operation draws on the stories and fates of individual people who persevere and maintain their sense of self and dignity under the most difficult circumstances.
